Andrew O Baoill

Welcome. Currently most of my material resides on my personal site but I'll be building the resources here over time. You've probably arrived here from the ICR listing of graduate students, complete with bios, but in case you haven't, I'll start with some information about me. I hold an MA in communications and cultural studies from Dublin City University and a B.Sc. in mathematics from NUI, Galway.

A former member of Ireland's state Broadcasting Complaints Commission, I worked for several years as a Market Analyst in eircom, Ireland's leading telecommunications provider. I am a licensed radio experimenter (EI7EIB) and experienced broadcaster, and was the founder of Flirt FM, one of Ireland's first permanent student radio stations, through which I gained exposure to the community radio movement.

My work focuses on political economy and organizational structures in participatory and alternative media, and I have published and spoken on topics such as weblogs, community radio, electronic voting, online debate, and digital democracy.

My weblog, funferal, concentrates on participatory media and current affairs, and I am involved with preparations to found a community radio station in Urbana, WRFU. I'm also a member of the Celtic Collective at WEFT, Champaign, which produces a weekly two hour radio show, focused on Celtic music and culture, each Sunday evening (6-8pm, 90.1FM).

My most recent work has looked at electronic voting, MoveOn.org, and the impact of technological change on non-commercial radio. At the time of writing I've finished my coursework, and and preparing to sit my preliminary examinations.
