Professor Clifford Christians has been named to the Charles H. Sandage Distinguished Professorship of Advertising (and Ethics) for a three-year term, effective immediately. In this capacity, he will give an annual college-wide lecture on the broad topic, "Advertising Ethics and American Consumer Culture."

Christians holds a Ph.D. in communications from the University of Illinois and is a former director of the Institute of Communications Research at the University. Currently he teaches in media studies and journalism and is a research professor in the College of Communications. In 2004, Christians was recognized for his scholarly work with the Paul Deutschmann Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

The professorship was established in 1990 to honor Sandage, who established the first advertising department in the country at the University of Illinois. Sandage served as its head from 1950 through 1966 and is widely known as the "father" of advertising education.
